AI Coding Startup Factory Hits $5 Billion Valuation After $200 Million Funding Round
Artificial intelligence startup Factory has raised $200 million in fresh funding at a $5 billion valuation, marking another major investment in the rapidly expanding market for AI-powered software development.
The San Francisco-based company announced the financing on September 15, saying the latest investment takes its total funding to more than $400 million.
The round included backing from Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital, Sound Ventures, NEA, Mantis VC and Clearlake. Factory said it plans to use the new capital to expand research, product development and its global go-to-market operations.
The valuation is particularly notable because of how quickly it has increased.
Factory raised $150 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in April. Its new $5 billion valuation therefore represents a more than threefold increase in roughly five months.
But the bigger story extends beyond one startup.
The investment provides another indication of how strongly venture capital and institutional investors are betting on artificial intelligence moving deeper into everyday software engineering.
What Does Factory Actually Do?
Factory was founded in 2023 by Matan Grinberg and Eno Reyes.
Its technology centres on AI agents that can work across different parts of the software-development lifecycle.
Rather than positioning artificial intelligence only as a tool that suggests the next few lines of code, companies such as Factory are trying to build systems capable of handling larger engineering tasks.
That can include developing code, testing software, identifying problems and helping maintain applications.
Factory describes its products as "Droids" and says its broader ambition is to create software-development systems that continuously improve.
The company says hundreds of thousands of developers use Factory and identifies Nvidia, Adobe, T-Mobile, Blackstone, Royal Bank of Canada and Palo Alto Networks among organisations using its technology.
Why Investors Are Spending So Much on AI Coding
Software development has emerged as one of the clearest commercial applications for generative AI.
For businesses, the attraction is straightforward.
Building and maintaining software can require large engineering teams, significant budgets and considerable time. If AI systems can reliably automate parts of that process, companies may be able to release products faster and allow engineers to concentrate on more complex work.
That potential has produced intense competition.
Factory is operating in a market that includes other heavily funded AI coding companies. Reuters reported that Cognition, another company developing autonomous coding technology, raised $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation earlier this month.

They are increasingly betting that it could become an important layer of enterprise technology infrastructure.
From AI Assistant to AI Worker
The first wave of generative AI development tools largely focused on assisting humans.
A developer would write code while an AI system suggested functions, completed lines or answered technical questions.
The industry is now pushing towards something more ambitious: autonomous or semi-autonomous agents capable of receiving a task and completing multiple stages of the work themselves.
